CGS & CHS: JACKET BASKETBALL CAMP 2024 YellowJacket Basketball Camp is great success! 36 campers grades 3rd thru 8th enjoy learning from high school players, coaches and one guest instructor BY JIM BEERS The Chester High School Boys Basketball Team held its annual basketball camp Wednesday through Friday June 12-14 at the Chester Grade School. This year’s event took place from 9:00 A.M. till 12 Noon each day. Head Basketball Coach, Chris Toledo, led the camp with assistance from Nick Severs, Assistant Coach and many of the current YellowJacket Boys Basketball Players. On most days there were as many as 20 YellowJacket players on hand to help lead the young campers. The daily camp was divided into two sessions based the on the age and pre-camp skills of the campers. Session I began at 9:00 A.M and concluded at 10:15 A.M. and included incoming 3rd through 5th graders. Session II began at 10:30 P.M. and lasted until 12 Noon and featured campers entering 6th through 8th graders. Sessions were designed to the age and skill level of campers and included primarily fundamental skill development. Coach Toledo said, “Most of the sessions concentrated on skill development. We worked on shooting, passing, dribbling, foot work and many basic principles of basketball.” “Our incoming freshmen through senior basketball players did a great job of assisting us by demonstrating the various skill sets and really helped lead the young, impressionable campers in skills and drills throughout the week.” On Thursday, campers received a special treat of being taught by former Chester resident and excellent all-around athlete, Jimmy Corrona. Coach Corrona played basketball as a Chester athlete, and went on to play at the collegiate level. After graduating college he coached and taught at grade school, high school, and collegiate levels after which he worked at the NBA level helping to promote basketball both here in America and across the world. Coach Corrona currently organizes and runs various shooting clinics and basketball camps across the United States and has consulted basketball coaches at all levels. The 2024 CHS Summer Basketball Camp Shooting Clinic was a highlight of the young campers’ week. Campers received excellent instruction throughout the three-day camp and learned a lot about basketball from coaches, the high school players and outside sources on a daily basis. In addition to skill instruction, each player received an official 2024 CHS Boys Basketball T-shirt and plenty of positive skill, attitude and personal confidence reinforcement. There were a total of 35 boys and one very brave and talented young lady that attended the 2024 summer camp for a total of 36 campers. Session I featured 16 campers including four 3rd graders, six 4th graders, and six 5th graders. Session II boasted 19 campers including eight 6th graders, four 7th graders, and seven 8th graders. Campers are listed below: SESSION I 3rd Grade Campers Cole Crawford Decklin Forsting Gavin Gross Karson Hecht Note: The young lady camper was Maren Jany, daughter of Zach and Stephanie Jany. She will be a 3rd Grader at St. Mary’s Catholic School. Even though she was not an official registered camper, she participated and did a fantastic job of keeping up with the 35 boys. 4th Grade Campers Jayden Fernandez Xander Hammel Grayson McCoy Will Petrowske Jase Tindall Toby Tindall 5th Grade Campers Billy Allison Evan Bargman Connor Draves Caleb Gross Ryder Le Guenel Cash Hargis SESSION II 6th Grade Campers Josiah Bert Kael Gartner Mason Howie Connor Long Blake Petrowske Gavin Studt Max Watson Branden Yankee 7th Grade Campers Hunter Brunkhorst Jake Dunn Jaxon Hanna Jason Stumpe 8th Grade Campers Duncan Bargman Preston Liefer Austin Partin Reed Petrowske Ty Tindall Cannon Wolff Jack Luthy The camp was considered to be a great success based upon the demonstrated improvement in the skills of the campers, the enjoyment seen in the camper’s eyes and interactions, and the enthusiasm that was apparent each day as the campers arrived and participated in camp activities. CGS & CHS: LADY JACKET VOLLEYBALL CAMP Lady Jacket Volleyball Youth Camp is huge success! Volleyball enthusiasts from Kindergarten to 8th Grade take advantage of learning from CHS Coaches and players BY JIM BEERS The week of June 3-6 the Chester High School Lady YellowJacket Coaches and players hosted the Annual Lady Jackets Youth Volleyball Camp for kids Kindergarten through 8th Grade. This year’s camp enjoyed 61 participants and the week was deemed a huge success by Head Coach Colleen Runge. Runge said, “Our camper total this year for summer camp was 61. It was a great turnout and we had a fabulous time!” The 2024 camp had three grade levels and separate workout times to provide an atmosphere that was age appropriate and conducive to learning with same age campers. Sessions were an hour in length with a 15-minute transition time in between sessions. This made for a long day of instruction by the coaches and CHS players, however, the excitement and energy displayed by the campers indicated that it was all well worth it! Group 1 had 24 campers Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. This group included Zoe Atchison, Emerson Stevens, Kennedy Risley, Quinn Davitz, Sophia Krantz, Maci Draves, Skylar Draves, Gwen Yankey, Annalynn Scorcz, Finley Eggemeyer, Emilia Johnson, MacKinzy Velasco, Harper Stewart, Elizabeth Absher, Teagan Draves, Huntlie Louveau, Piper Runge, Isabella Risley, Landynn Phillips, Cora Hargis, Sayler Moist, Karson Nanney, Emmalyn Martin, and Braylee Berner. Group 2 consisted of 21 campers going into 3rd through 5th Grades. This group consisted of Elora Keyser, Lillian Johnson, Paisley Johnson, Katelyn Middendorf, Myah Palacio, Harper Moist, Ady Caron, Paisley Ezell, Mia Salger, Eriana Quintana, Brooke Chandler, Ezra Gaertner, Natalie Guethle, Chloe Keeton, Weylyn Quintana, Freya Roche, Carter Belton, Summer Thompson, Oaklynn Wallace, Adaya Wunderlich, and Atleigh Sullivan. Group 3, the oldest group, had 17 campers entering 6th through 8th Grades. Included in Group 3 were Sophia Bryant, Brenna Hammel, Brystol Stellhorn, Hadlie Cushman, Mabrie Cushman, Mackinly Davitz, Kelsey Davitz, Kristin Presswood, Josie Gaertner, Taylor Stauffer, Payton Stauffer, Heylhn Masterson, Isabella Vogt, Alyssa Lemanski, Morgan Nanney, Hayven Stellhorn, and Brooklyn Eggemeyer. Coach Runge and Assistant Coach Reese Chandler said, “Daily instruction focused on the fundamentals of volleyball. The campers learned to pass, set, hit and serve. We played games and even had some obstacle courses which seemed to be a favorite of the Kindergarten through 5th Grade Groups.” “Overall it was a fun week and we can’t wait to do it again next year. I want to say thank you to all of the campers who attended! We can’t wait to see you again next year”, said Head Coach Runge. In addition to Coaches Runge and Chandler, Chester High School Lady Jacket Volleyball Players assisted with instruction each session. Not only were they valuable in the arena of instruction, but the high school players were very good examples and role models for the young campers. Several of the Lady Jackets were incoming freshmen and the camp gave them the opportunity to get experience in learning the team’s operational methods and leading the young campers in their various instructional efforts. Finally, spending the week with the upperclassmen helped the freshmen to bond with the high school coaches and players. Members of the Lady Jacket Volleyball team that were present on the final day of camp included Vanessa Green, Jaden Bert, Kaylin Jany, Hannah Crowe, Marlie Caby, Maddie Roy, Brooke Howie, Addy Jany, Ava Bert, Camryn Wolff, Gianna Eggemeyer, Erin Liefer, Aleah Eggemeyer, Aubrey Colvis, Avery Hasemeyer, Addison Coffey, Taylor Korando, Peyton Parker, and Hailey Yankey. Overall the week of Youth Camp proved to be very beneficial to not only the 61 campers, but to the Lady Jacket coaches and players. (photos courtesy of Jim Beers)
